EVELYN CHOW
Art is a bridge to connect reality and the unreal world. Anxiety bothers me all the time, sometimes I want to cut off my head for a moment of peace. For knowing it is impossible, I jump into the world of art. It becomes my sustenance, a place to escape and a way to express myself.
My works are diaries, the art reflects ‘me’ in videos, paintings, and sculptures. I called them portraits. Anxiety could be very personal, but also highly contagious. To create a violent, bloody, dark artwork, it delivers feelings straightly. But rather than spreading fear, presenting thought-provoking exercises is my aim. Therefore, more whiteness and patterns in my works, create visual sparseness and vibrant luminosity. It displays a rich, joyful, harmless world in my mind. It is a utopia that brings people into dreams.
Anxiousness reacts to problems in my body. I have started losing hair and had skin conditions. Hair candy and eczema lotion became essential things and intruded my life. Then I dreamed about them. My painting 'The Candy Bottle' and the developed works express these ideas. A watermelon flower climbs up a candy bottle until it covers it, unknown plants anywhere. A big honeycomb falls, the sweet and viscous liquid flows down to the bottom. At a moment, it was filled with sweetness, happiness, and surprises. But the honey-fall did not stop, not until I opened my eyes. The pressures are overwhelming, although everything looks utopic. The assorted colours provide stimulation that gives a way to learn about the interior world I created in dreams. The presence of bright, dream-like colours invites viewers to explore the visual spectrum of the world and know about it in an engaging and memorable way. There is only one straight line breaking out the backgrounds, instead, curves, round shapes, dots are all over the place. They associate protection, harmlessness, and innocence. It also reflects a problem of addiction and being over-reliant on drugs. The works show specifically the ideas of my physical and mental issues.
